According to the American Cancer Society, substance abuse and addiction make up about 30% of all cancer deaths. Every year, on 4th February, we observe World Cancer Day, a global initiative led by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) to raise awareness about cancer and encourage its prevention, detection and treatment.
It’s crucial to understand that certain addictive behaviours can significantly increase the risk of developing various cancers. For instance, excessive alcohol consumption is linked to an increased risk of cancers such as those of the liver, mouth, throat and oesophagus.
Similarly, the use of illicit drugs can elevate cancer risk, especially when combined with substances known to be carcinogenic, like alcohol and tobacco.
By recognising these connections, we can take proactive steps towards prevention. Limiting or avoiding the use of these substances can significantly reduce one’s cancer risk.
Additionally, supporting loved ones in overcoming addiction not only improves their overall health but also decreases their susceptibility to cancer.
This World Cancer Day, let’s commit to raising awareness about the link between addiction and cancer. By fostering understanding and encouraging healthier choices, we can work together towards a future with lower cancer rates and improved well-being for all.
